Repair, Reuse, Resell: Circular-Economy Retail Becomes a 2026 Main Street Trend
Main Street America's annual trends forecast for 2026 flags a shift toward "circular economy" retail — business models built around repair, reuse, refurbishment, and resale rather than only new product sales — as one of eight defining trends for small businesses this year.
The report's own example is instructive: an outdoor recreation store that sells bikes, repairs them, takes trade-ins, refurbishes used bikes for resale, and even repurposes parts, creating several revenue streams from a single customer relationship instead of one. That structure lets an existing retail business raise margins by increasing engagement per customer rather than only chasing new foot traffic.
The trend lines up with several already-established local business categories: consignment and resale boutiques, upholstery and furniture repair shops, shoe and leather repair, and bike shops all operate on some version of a repair-and-resell model, often with less direct competition than straight new-goods retail because fewer operators offer the service leg at all.
Main Street America also noted that its 2026 Main Street Directors' survey found "supporting businesses and entrepreneurs" as the top programming priority among local downtown organizations this year — a sign that many towns are actively looking to help new circular-economy and repair-oriented concepts get off the ground.
